Just across the Ramblas from our hotel was a large public market - the Boqueiro Market. It's how the locals get their food and it's amazingly colourful. I didn't see a large supermarket, but we weren't staying in that kind of a quarter. This seems like a very civilized way of transporting food from farm to table.
